Munson opened with the possible ramifications of the unusually cold weather on the Super Bowl in Atlanta, and asked Vince if cold weather ever affected bowl practices. Dooley discussed the Cotton Bowl against Texas and the Liberty Bowl in 1987 against Arkansas. They also talked about things that went on at the recent NCAA meetings concerning basketball. Dooley said these main areas were focused on, and were discussion topics only - NO NEW RULES, yet. SEC Commissioner Kramer was especially passionate in discussing these topics, making allusions to the Titanic.

(a) Low graduation rates - if a student athlete leaves early and is not in good academic standing, the school would lose that scholarship until the player’s 4 year class eligibility ended.

(b) Summer recruiting - AAU coaches, not high school coaches, have most of the control in helping a player choose a prospective college. Eliminating the summer recruiting period may put more of the control back in the hands of the high school coaches.

(c) Amateurism - an idea was proposed which would allow a player who had turned professional to return to college and be eligible in that sport, less the number of years he had been a pro in that sport. Dooley said he could support that rule for one year only, but not for someone who had been pro at least two years, as he thinks it would harm amateur athletics. That would also give some consideration to kids who may have been talked into things, then thought better of it once they found out all was not glitter.

(d) Scholarship limits - four new grant in aids per year.

Also, voting is now with a 16 member board of directors, consisting of each conference (the UK president represents the SEC), not the old system in which each NCAA member institution got a vote. This board of directors will vote on new rules in March.

Vince prefers to be "hands off" towards coaches as AD, offering support of whatever kind when requested. He said that is what he always wanted, and got, from Coach Eaves (who had also been a successful football and basketball coach). Vince said he does not want to inject his feelings into a given situation or be seen as meddling. No matter how often he addresses that subject, he figures rumors will be spread when convenient - when a coach is perceived as struggling and/or during recruiting.

A caller asked about any football camps at UGA. Vince mentioned Coach Donnan’s camp, and said he (VD) is a big fan of football camps for youngsters for teaching fundamentals, teamwork, good attitude and other values at an early age.

Munson thought recruiting was harder many years ago; Vince agreed, since it lasted all year. Someone would always try to recruit while another coach or staff may be taking a break. Now, there are limits as to when coaches can be on the road. It is still very tough competition

OOC scheduling came up yet again, and VD restated the current rule again. We are looking into an intersectional game for 2008. VD thinks it would be healthy for college football and for UGA. We went to Michigan in 1965 because we had to travel for "money" games at that time. That trend has now been reversed. VD and Munson also discussed the upcoming Ga. Southern game. Erk is still retired, living in Statesboro, playing golf, and going to the beach occasionally. His sons are both in coaching - Rusty is at Ga. Southern, and Jay is moving around coaching in high school.

Should we adjust the schedule to have a week off before the Florida game? Vince reminded a caller that sometimes an off week is good, sometimes not. You just don’t want to play one demanding or rivalry game in front of another, such as when we used to play Florida and Auburn on consecutive weeks.

Reggie Brown cannot participate in spring drills since he is enrolled and paying his own way for spring semester. Under NCAA rules, he is not allowed to be on scholarship until next season or practice with the team until then. He is presently working out on his own. Vince says JD is pleased Reggie is working out on his own.

The Lady Dawgs got the credit due them…Vince had nothing but praise for the job Landers and the team have done, especially the last two weeks, and we certainly want them to finally bring a national title home. The big win over Tennessee was highlighted. Vince is also optimistic about the future of the men’s hoops team under Coach Harrick.
