Hotline Reports
Munson & Dooley started off, and concluded 50 minutes later, picking up the discussion over length of games from last week. For instance, the NFL does not stop the clock after a 1st down. It shortens a game, but takes away 7-8 plays. Halftime was also shortened to about 10 minutes; this will never happen in college because of the great bands that many schools have (especially in the SEC). They went on to bowl slotting. VD pointed out that those bowl selection orders are really a second or third pick, not necessarily the second or third pick. He went through this year’s bowl selection process as an example. If money is so tight in college athletics, why do schools take so many extra people on a bowl trip? VD gave examples of extra folks (plus families) who might go on a bowl trip The Athletic Dept. pays for employees and spouses, but not for the kids (the employee has to pay for that).

We have started the fund raising for the indoor facility and will soon be meeting with University financial people to discuss the financing and other details of the project, along with the academic achievement center, which will be part of the package. Hopefully this will be discussed with the Athletic Board in late February.

The first caller asked VD about a successor to Coach Kines. VD reminded the caller that is the responsibility of the head coach. The coach discusses this with the AD only when a decision is made, and how much salary can be offered. VD went on to praise Coach Kines for being a loyal soldier who probably went on to FSU since Kines has known the Seminole defensive coordinator for many years. Another caller begged VD to get more involved with the defense (last in the SEC). VD realizes we will not realize our potential unless the play of the defense improves. VD and JD have discussed things that need to be done to improve the team before next season; VD expects JD to make moves in the near future.

VD reminded again that along with high salaries comes less loyalty to assistants, and more responsibility.

Another call prompted a discussion of all sports trophies, including the old Bernie Moore trophy and the present Sears Cup. VD reminded Munson that Stanford can field so many teams because of its endowment. VD is not sure if all "Olympic" sports will be able to support themselves - at least not in his lifetime, but pointed out that Coach Yoculan is determined that the Gym Dogs be able to pay for themselves in the near future, pointing out the ticket sales and scholarship endowments.

OOC scheduling came up yet again; VD gave the same answer he did last week (we picked up Clemson after trying to work out a deal with ND). Hopefully by 2008 we will be able to play a game outside the south.

VD has no use for fans tearing down goalposts; that creates a big crowd control problem and can be dangerous. We should be thankful for the hedges which basically prevents that. VD (jokingly?) suggested we can let fans head out to the practice fields and tear a goal post down if it means that much.

The new Volleyball coach will be announced tomorrow morning.

Many in academia were concerned about a possible step back when the NCAA lost a District Court case earlier this year. However, VD reported that the Court of Appeals reversed the verdict in favor of the NCAA standards. No changes are expected to the current policies. As an aside, VD noted that HOPE Scholarship rules will tighten next year, requiring that the 3.0 HS GPA would consist of core classes only, not including driver’s education, PE, etc.
